Here are a couple of pics of our latest labrador retriever litters with their first pheasant. The picture has chocolate and black lab pups playing and later sleeping on their prize.

This is one of the most important things we do with our future little gundogs. Getting them used to the scent and birds in general cannot start too early. I also start to evaluate the labrador retriever puppies during this period.

Nothing is more fun than working with these puppies. We have been soicalizing the little pups for weeks and now they will learn what they have that nose for!!

We are proud to announce the start of retriever training classes held by Soggy Acres Retrievers on our properties starting this Spring 2010.

We have long been asked to help in the training of the Labrador Retrievers we sell. Due to our kennel size we are unable to take dogs in for full service training. At the request of some of our clients we have decided to start retriever training classes that will meet once per week. There will be two different classes to start:

The first will be titled “The Hunting Puppy.”
This three week course will center on obedience and early training a puppy needs prior to formal gundog training. We will take 8 handlers with retriever pups under the age of 6 months. Each handler will be taught the concepts of training a young pup and techniques to prepare their puppy of adulthood and formal gundog training.

The second course offered will be titled “Basic Gundog Training.”
This will be a 6 week course where your dog is taken from a pup, to a Gundog. We will teach the concepts in obedience, force fetch, collar conditioning, Marking, Quartering and Flushing, and end with field work and live birds. This will be hands on with only 6 handlers and dogs being accepted for each class.

Our classes will be held on our properties in Southern WI, in town of Delavan. We have some of the most diverse property at our disposal, including 43 acres and 6 different ponds.

There will be training equipment needed during the course of the school. We do sell all of the needed equipment and will give a 5% discount on listed prices for all class registrants.

These classes should fill up fast once we have the dates set. Please contact us if you have any questions about the training classes or the equipment you may need.

The show is really about your favorite hunting field or a nearby wildlife area. It’s about Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s mission. It’s about wildlife habitat.

National Pheasant Fest is returning to the Iowa Events Center to rejuvenate interest in restoring and creating upland habitat in Iowa and beyond; to galvanize hunters to be strong stewards of the land; to give youth the sense that the outdoors and conservation can be fun and rewarding.

So bring the family, especially the kids. Come admire and inquire about the bird dogs. Seek out advice from wildlife habitat professionals. And of course, check out the great outdoor gear that will be available from all our sponsors and exhibitors. But most importantly, come ready to leave a legacy!

Jeff Fuller, owner of Soggy Acres Retrievers in Delavan, WI will be giving a training on Picking a Puppy and the First Six Months in Seminar Room 8 each day of the Convention. Make sure you attend this one of a kind training!

In the evolution of Floppy Ears training, the question of what methods would be best for Floppy come into play. Lets face it, most people know little about training a dog and need to develop some type of program.

The first step is to chose a method of training to be applied. There are numerous books, periodicals, tapes and DVDs out there to use as a guide. But then the question arises, “which method would be right for Floppy and me?” A good answer to this question would be to first decide the final destination for Floppy Ears in his quest for higher learning. A good suggestion would also be to aim your training program in a direction so that once Floppy accomplishes your set goals, you can still ascend to new heights if desired at a later date. At this point the plan of attack should be to find a training program that is easy to understand for the trainer. If the trainer cannot figure out what the instructions are then it should not be expected for the pupil to magically accomplish the set goals.

The next step is to acquire the needed equipment for training Ole Floppy Ears. Do not try to cut costs and corners by not being fully equipped to implement your chosen training plan. Floppy will gain most of his/her knowledge during these tender years so make sure you have the tools to help.

Hey we got a great topic in…… How to train boundaries in your yard to Floppy Ears.

There are a lot of products and methods for this. You can invest a large amount of money into an electric fence or other related products.

I like to use a basic Ecollar and some stern verbal reinforcement. The key to any ecollar training is to first make sure Floppy knows what command you are giving them. The command I would use to teach yard boundries would be’”No, here.” This would establish with Floppy that he/she is not allowed in that area. I would work on this for a week or so. Facilitate Floppy into being corrected. By this I mean put Floppy in a position to be corrected. Simply walk Floppy to the area. Once the Floppy gets near the boundry correct him/her with the command.

Once the Ole Floppy Ears has figured out that there are boundries incorporate the ecollar. This is also the point where you need to have Floppy properly conditioned to the ecollar. If you decide to use this method get a good book that will teach this. Tritroncis Retriever Training is the book suggested by us! We always have several copies and will ship to your house. You can learn further training techniques that are used by the pros in this book. Its an easy read, regimented program, and even I can understand it due to its simple step by step process.

Keep the Topics coming…..we’ll keep you up to date with Training Tips For Floppy Ears!
